Archaeologists are highly educated scientists who study past cultures by examining artifacts, They plan excavations, obtain permissions, supervise work crews and participate in hands-on tasks like surveying, excavating, cleaning and studying artifacts. They also do much of their work outside of the field at Universities where they write papers and go to conferences. Think aarchaeological discoveries are a thing of the past? Tell that to Dr Eilat Mazar. His team recently discovered the oldest recorded written document - A 2x2.8X1 centimeter fragment dated to the 14th century B.C.E.. It was discovered between the southern wall of the Old City of Jerusalem and the City of David to its south. $$$ Archaeologists leading an excavation make between $30,000 and $50,000. Field directors who work under the principal archaeologists make between $25,000 and $40,000. Getting your foot in the door The best way to start your career in archaeology is to volunteer.
